I SPENT THE REST OF the day putting the spell together, thankful for Charlotte’s well-stocked cupboards.

When I was done, Willow and I headed to one of Charlotte’s spare rooms, deciding that an early night was probably best.

“So,” Willow said as I closed the door behind us and started to remove my armour, “how long were you listening to me and Natalie before you came into the room?”

I raised an eyebrow. “You mean you don’t know? I would have thought an assassin couldn’t be sneaked up on like that.”

Willow rolled her eyes. “What can I say, I was distracted.”

“We’re in enemy territory, babe. I don’t think we have the luxury of getting distracted.”

Willow raised an eyebrow. “Babe?”

“What? Am I not allowed to use a term of endearment for you?”

“Well, you are, but babe? It’s not exactly Ni’tal.”

I sighed as I pulled on some pyjamas before flopping down onto the bed. “Is it really so different? I mean, Ni’tal could just be Elven for ‘Babe’ as far as I know.”

A slight blush formed over Willow’s cheeks as she looked away. “Ah... I guess I never gave you an accurate translation, did I?”

I shrugged. “You’ve always just said that it was a way of saying that you care about me.”

“It is, but it’s also a promise. Most Elven endearments are promises, actually.”

“Oh? And what are you promising?”

Willow smiled softly as she looked me over and it was my turn to blush. “It depends on the Elf. Most are promising to protect and love and stand beside their beloved, no matter what. And then some also have specific promises as well, unique to their relationship.”

I frowned slightly, butterflies appearing in my stomach as I took a moment to find the nerve to put voice to my thoughts. “Willow... Those sound like wedding vows.”

Her blush deepened. “Well... They’re not not that. But the ‘Ni’ prefix denotes that the promises haven’t been formally made. It would be ‘Yi’tal’ once they were.”

I bit my lip, unable to resist the urge to tease her. “Well, I don’t really have a term that works as proto-wedding vows readily available in English. Though, I guess if you truly intend to bond with me, like you told Natalie, I could always start calling you my bonded. Or would ‘my wife’ be better?”

I couldn’t help but grin as Willow turned crimson at the term.

“I... Either,” she eventually squeaked. “Either would be fine.”

I just held out my hand, and she took it, allowing me to pull her down to sit on the bed next to me.

“So,” she said, clearing her throat in an attempt to regain some composure, “you heard that much at least.”

“I heard everything from you telling Natalie that you first realised that you were in love with me when you realised that I would fight for our future together. No matter what that ended up looking like.”

Willow leaned forward at that, capturing my lips with hers as her hands went to my oversized t-shirt and gripped it tight.

I wondered if putting pyjamas on had been a pointless exercise.
